01 · Base Material

304 vs 316/316L stainless steel

“316 is better” is too simple for B2B sourcing. The best specification depends on availability, corrosion-resistance requirements, target price and order volume.

Commercial standard

304 Stainless Steel

304 is the more common base material for ready-stock stainless steel fashion jewelry. Its broad market availability makes it practical for lower-volume sourcing, faster style selection and cost-sensitive collections.

Higher specification

316 / 316L Stainless Steel

316-family stainless steel adds molybdenum for improved resistance to pitting in chloride-containing environments. It can be the right choice for specific performance requirements, but material and component availability typically means a higher MOQ and cost.

Important: stainless-steel grade alone does not prove finished-jewelry compliance. Material composition and metal release are different questions. A finished article should be evaluated according to the regulations and test methods required by its destination market.
02 · Nickel, Chromium & Testing

Nickel content is not the same as nickel release.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings in stainless-steel jewelry. Both 304 and 316-family stainless steels normally use nickel as an alloying element; 316 can even have a higher nominal nickel range than 304. What skin-contact rules evaluate is release from the finished article under the relevant test method.

Material verification

Material grade can be supported by supplier documentation and, where required, material analysis. This tells us what alloy the part is made from.

Finished-product compliance

For regulated markets, finished jewelry may require project-specific testing for nickel release and restricted substances such as lead and cadmium. Testing is arranged only when requested; reports belong to the commissioning customer and cannot be shared across unrelated products or buyers. Scope and cost depend on the finished design, components, production batch and destination market. Small orders do not remove applicable compliance obligations.

About chromium: chromium is a normal, essential alloying element that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. We do not treat “contains chromium” as a failure claim. Any chromium-specific requirement should be stated and tested according to the applicable regulation and report scope.
03 · EU Reference Points

Compliance should be tied to a market and a test method.

For EU jewelry, REACH requirements are a useful example of why the finished article matters. These reference points are not a substitute for a project-specific test plan.

04 · Gold Finish

Real 18K gold PVD vacuum plating — not simply a gold-colored surface.

CHARMOND gold-tone products use real 18K gold in the PVD vacuum plating finish. Plating thickness is a technical specification, not just a color description.

Is 316L always better than 304 for jewelry?

Not always. 316-family steel offers higher corrosion resistance, but 304 is the mainstream, widely available choice for much ready-stock fashion jewelry and usually supports a more practical MOQ and cost. Choose based on your program, not the grade name alone.

Does 304 stainless steel contain nickel?

Yes, standard 304 stainless steel normally contains nickel as part of the alloy. “Contains nickel” and “releases nickel above a regulated limit” are not the same statement.

If stainless steel contains nickel, how can finished jewelry meet EU requirements?

EU requirements for skin-contact jewelry focus on nickel release measured from the finished article with applicable methods. The finished product — including its surface system — must be evaluated against the relevant release limit.

Why is the MOQ usually higher for 316/316L?

Compared with common 304 ready-stock supply, 316-family components and style availability can be more limited. A project may therefore require dedicated material/component purchasing or production, increasing the commercial MOQ.

Is your gold tone made with real gold?

Yes. Our gold-tone products use a real 18K gold electroplated finish rather than only a gold-colored surface description.

How thick is your 18K gold plating?

Our typical plating thickness is about 0.03–0.06 μm, depending on product geometry and production requirements. For a specific program, the agreed specification should be confirmed before sampling/bulk production.

How long will the gold plating last?

There is no honest universal lifetime number. Wear depends on friction, skin chemistry, sweat, cosmetics, chemicals, storage and care. We prefer to define the actual finish specification and, when needed, a relevant performance-test requirement.

Can you provide compliance reports?

Compliance documentation should match the product and destination market. Tell us the required market/standard and product type so the correct material or finished-product test scope can be confirmed.
